What Happens During the Initial Exam?
Your first visit begins with a detailed conversation about your health history, current symptoms, lifestyle, and the concerns that brought you in. I may also evaluate your pulse, tongue, ears, areas of discomfort, and other findings that help me understand the patterns affecting your health.
This information allows me to determine the most appropriate treatment approach for you and develop a plan based on your symptoms, priorities, and response to care.
What Happens During the Acupuncture Treatment?
During the treatment, I will place very fine, sterile, single-use needles at carefully selected acupuncture points.
I primarily use Dr. Tan’s Balance Method, which often involves points on the arms and legs rather than placing needles directly where you are experiencing pain or dysfunction. Treating distally allows the affected area to remain free so we can assess changes during the session.
Once the needles are in place, you will rest quietly while the treatment is working. The number and placement of the needles will depend on the reason for your visit and how your body responds.
What Might Acupuncture Feel Like?
The needles are usually inserted gently and are generally well tolerated. You may feel a brief sensation as a needle is placed, followed by heaviness, warmth, tingling, movement, or deep relaxation.
Many clients feel calm during treatment, and some notice changes in pain, mobility, or tension during the first session. More complex or long-standing concerns often improve gradually as treatments build upon one another.
How Should I Prepare for My Visit?
Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows access to your arms and lower legs. Because the Balance Method commonly uses points below the elbows and knees, fitted sleeves or tight pants can make treatment more difficult.
Eat a light meal before your visit so that you are not arriving on an empty stomach. Bring a current list of medications and supplements, along with any recent labs or imaging that may be relevant to your care.
What Happens After the First Visit?
After your treatment, we will discuss how you responded and what the next step may be. Your care plan will depend on the nature of your symptoms, how long they have been present, and how your body responds to treatment.
Acupuncture may be used on its own or alongside auricular medicine, functional medicine, homeopathy, and other natural approaches when appropriate. Your care is individualized rather than based on a one-size-fits-all protocol.
